— Earth Day events at the University of Central Oklahoma started Tuesday with Park-ing Day, organized by the Student Programming Board to show students that parking spaces do not have to be just for parking.

“The idea is kind of to take conventional spaces and give students the opportunity to see the space can be used in different ways,” said Nathanial Garrod, Campus Activities graduate assistant.

The student board transformed 20 spaces from the visitors lot into a park with free food, crafts and other environmentally friendly activities.

“We have giant Scrabble, we have some board games over here — Connect Four, checkers, backgammon — things you'd see in a park,” Garrod said.

Participants were given free sandwiches made with peanut butter and jelly or ham and cheese, built by the student board members.

Students Callie Mort and Ashley Kerr stopped by the parking spaces for sandwiches and chips.

“I mean I love PB& J, so that's always good,” Mort said.

Students Sunny Heuangvilay and Nancy Nguyen heard about Park-ing Day through social media.

“We decided to stop by on the way to class to play giant Scrabble,” Nguyen said.

UCO's Earth Day effort to raise environmental awareness continues Wednesday and Thursday.

The Earth Day Committee will sponsor an Earth Day fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday on the first floor of the Nigh University Center.
