University of Central Oklahoma's honor society helps feed the hungry

Soon it will be the season of giving, and one University of Central Oklahoma academic honor society has a head start with its spirit of sharing.

The latest recipient of Alpha Lambda Delta's “Eliminate Hunger” campaign is the Edmond Hope Center, which provides social services to the needy. Recently the Alpha Lambda president, Randee Morales showed up at the Hope Center with 239 cans of food. And that was just a month after the students helped pack nearly 1,100 boxes of food for Feed The Children in Oklahoma City.

Another project will happen this month, though officers haven't decided just who will benefit. But there will be another effort to help the hungry, said Morales, a sophomore and finance major from Morrison.

“I never realized the amount of poverty which exists,” she said. “You never know the difference you can make by doing just the little things. It's important to get involved.”

Morales' volunteer efforts are associated with her distinction as a KFC scholar. She said each year, the restaurant chain based in Kentucky names 75 scholars nationwide. Each are expected to donate two to 10 volunteer hours a week to their community.
