— The University of Oklahoma School of Dance will host a memorial celebration to honor dancer Miguel Terekhov at 3 p.m. Sunday at Holmberg Hall in OU's Reynolds Performing Arts Center.

Terekhov, along with his wife, Yvonne Chouteau, founded the initial program in dance at OU in 1963. Terekhov died Jan. 3 at he age of 83.

As principal dancers with Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, and Terekhov with Col. Wassily de Basil's Original Ballet Russe earlier, the two arrived in Oklahoma City in 1961 with two baby daughters in tow to visit Chouteau's parents.

C.E. Chouteau, Yvonne's father, convinced then-OU President George Lynn Cross that ballet classes would be an excellent addition to courses in physical education.

Terekhov built the university's program, established in 1963 as one of the first fully accredited curricula in dance in the United States.

The memorial event will honor Terekhov's life as a performer, choreographer and teacher.

A photo montage will present details from his early career with the Original Ballet Russe and Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Video clips will show him rehearsing pas de deux with Yvonne Chouteau.
