Police temporarily shut down major travel routes in northwest Oklahoma City on Thursday afternoon as a bomb squad investigated two suspicious backpacks found unattended.

The first was discovered hanging from the Grand Boulevard bridge over Lake Hefner Parkway and the second was west of the bridge at N Portland Avenue and Lake Hefner Drive. Both were determined safe upon further investigation by a bomb squad, police Capt. Dexter Nelson said.

All lanes of Lake Hefner Parkway were shut down north of Britton Road and south of Northwest Expressway for more than an hour. It’s believed the backpacks might have belonged to runners, Nelson said, as they were filled with clothes, snacks and drinks.
