UPDATE: Man arrested after Midwest City standoff amid fire, gunshot
A man was arrested at a Midwest City apartment complex after a three-hour standoff that ended when he set an apartment on fire, police report.
MIDWEST CITY — A man who was upset about getting an eviction notice at a Midwest City apartment complex barricaded himself inside an apartment with a rifle and then set the place on fire, Assistant Police Chief Sid Porter said.
Joseph Dale Jones, 49, was arrested on an arson complaint following a three-hour standoff, Porter said.
The standoff started Tuesday night at the Calico Corner Apartments, 2212 Felix Place, when Jones had a dispute with a current tenant, police Capt. Bill Howard said.
About 10:20 p.m., Jones chased the tenant out of the apartment and threatened to shoot anyone who came in after him, Howard said.
Police officers evacuated the apartment complex residents.
“Our officers did an outstanding job getting those out of the apartments,” Howard said.
Jones fired several shots inside the apartment, but no one was hit by gunfire, he said.
After about three hours, he said, Jones set the apartment on fire. He then retreated from the fire and was arrested as firefighters put out the blaze, Howard said.
Fire damage was mostly contained to one unit, but other units were damaged by smoke and water, Howard said.
Jones was arrested on an arson complaint and taken to the Midwest City jail.
