A man was fatally shot by a Cleveland County deputy Saturday morning during a traffic stop.

About 8:45 a.m., a deputy stopped two men in an SUV at 24th Avenue SW and Boyd Street. Cleveland County sheriff’s spokeswoman Meghan McCormick said the driver of the vehicle told deputies there were drugs and a gun in the vehicle.

After a K-9 unit detected drugs in the vehicle, deputies began to search it. At that time, the passenger of the SUV ran to the K-9 deputy’s patrol car and got inside. When the deputy tried to pull the man from the car, the man began to drive away and dragged the deputy a short distance, McCormick said.

Another deputy on the scene shot the man driving the car. He was taken to a Norman hospital where he was pronounced dead, McCormick said.

The driver of the SUV was arrested on drug complaints and was booked into Cleveland County jail.

Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave while detectives investigate the shooting. has disabled the comments for this article.
