A police officer investigating a report of shots being fired at the Bryant Square shopping mall Tuesday shot a suspect in the stomach.

Police have not released the name of either the officer or the man who was shot outside a restaurant on the north side of the mall at Second Street and Bryant Avenue.

Glynda Chu, Edmond police spokeswoman, said the man was undergoing surgery Tuesday afternoon at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

His condition was not available.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay, Chu said.

The shooting occurred about 11:40 a.m. as people were gathering for lunch at Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant and nearby Thai Delight restaurant.

Neither the officer nor anyone else was injured in the incident, Chu said.

The officer repeatedly told the man to put down the gun, then the man pointed the gun at the officer, Chu said.

Several witnesses told The Oklahoman they heard the gunshots, but did not see the shooting.

Janet Rockler, of Edmond, said she and two men were in the Thai restaurant when the shooting happened.

“My friend heard the shooting, and they ran in the back of the kitchen,” said Barbie Hardman, of Oklahoma City, who was meeting Rockler for lunch.

Yellow crime scene tape closed the north side of the mall for more than two hours while officers gathered evidence from the sidewalk and parking lot. Los Arcos was closed following the shooting, but was back open by midafternoon.
