A man was arrested Monday evening after two people were shot and an officer fired at the gunman in a southwest Oklahoma City apartment complex, police reported.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a man reportedly shot a woman and a man multiple times near and inside an apartment unit at Oak Grove Apartments, 3301 SW 17, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said.

When an officer arrived, he saw the gunman and fired at least once, missing the man. The gunman ran inside the apartment unit and surrendered to police after more officers arrived, Knight said.

The female victim was taken to OU Medical Center and is in critical condition. The male victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

Kendra John was inside her apartment with her daughter and grandchild when she heard at least 10 gunshots ring out through the complex.

When she stepped outside, she saw police officers barricading off the apartment’s playground area and brought a man out of an apartment unit.

“He (the gunman) was just shooting the guns outside like crazy, then the police blocked off everything,” John said. “It’s just scary because stuff like that doesn’t happen around here. Not in the front (of the apartment complex). I don’t know about the back but the front, it’s not that bad.”

The officer who shot at the gunman has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, Knight said.

No names were released Monday night.
