Daughter of slain Tecumseh couple is found shot to death

Her husband, Justin Byus, 25, was arrested without incident after the body was found about 3:30 a.m. in the couple's home at 27 Bella Vista Lane, Shumaker said.

Byus was the daughter of Gary and Linda Haas, both 61, of Tecumseh, who were killed Aug. 2, 2010, in New Mexico. Their remains were discovered in their burned-out travel trailer. An escaped Arizona inmate is charged in their deaths.

Cathy Byus and other family members filed lawsuits in Maricopa County State Court in Arizona and successfully sued the Management & Training Corp., a Utah private prison company, the state of Arizona and Arizona Department of Corrections.

Jacob Diesselhorst, Cathy Byus' attorney and friend, said the lawsuits had been resolved, and there was an agreement not to discuss amount of the judgment. The family had sought $40 million.

Diesselhorst said he spoke with the family and they are distraught and saddened by yet another death in the family.

“The family asked to respect their privacy,” Diesselhorst said. “You have to understand how difficult this is for us. Cathy was a wonderful woman and mother and she will be greatly missed by her friends and family.”
