Portions of Oklahoma could see large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes Saturday and Sunday, potentially affecting a busy weekend in the Oklahoma City metro.

The National Weather Service Norman Forecast Office is predicting severe storms to develop over the western and southwestern parts of the state early Saturday evening, meteorologist Ryan Barnes said.

The storms are expected to reach central Oklahoma on Saturday night. Residents can expect high winds, large hail and possibly tornadoes, Barnes said.

Events coincide

This comes during one of the busiest weekends of the spring for the metro, possibly affecting the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, the Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts and the Norman Music Festival. Other events are scheduled as well.

The marathon is planned to begin at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, though marathon staff will work with meteorologists and emergency officials to determine whether the race should be delayed or canceled, according to a news release.

In the case of severe weather that causes a delay, marathon officials have identified on their website three places participants can take shelter.
