A leaking tanker truck that was hauling maple syrup slickened Interstate 44 early Wednesday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

The driver told troopers he noticed something spraying from the back of the truck about 5:30 a.m. as he drove west on Interstate 44 at SW 89, so he pulled over, said patrol Lt. Brian Orr.

The right lane of I-44 was shut down before Oklahoma Department of Transportation trucks spread sand and salt to cover slick spots, Orr said.

Orr said syrup had leaked from the truck as it traveled west from NW 36 to SW 89. The driver was going to the Braum’s Dairy Farms plant in Tuttle.

Troopers were investigating the cause of the leak, but the driver was not cited for failure to secure a load since no wrecks resulted and the truck did not get into a traffic accident, Orr said.
