If Penn Square Mall was looking for a big name to headline the remodeling project getting under way, they got it: Michael Kors.

The upscale clothing and accessories retailer is opening in a 1,900-square-foot space at the mall, 1901 Northwest Expressway. The store is set for a fall or winter opening, said mall spokeswoman Mis Gaston. The retailer is expected to spend $215,000 to renovate its space, according to a commercial building permit application filed with the city. Michael Kors has not officially announced the new location.

Other retailers coming to Penn Square Mall include Sara Sara Cupcakes, which will open a holiday shop near the Lego store next month, then relocate into the revamped food court once construction is complete.

L'Occitane, a skin care and beauty company founded in Provence, a region of France, also has requested a permit to remodel a space at the mall.

Having a local vendor like Sara Sara Cupcakes reveals a new direction for the mall's food court, which has traditionally been comprised of national chain restaurants.

Last month, Simon Property Group, which owns the mall, announced Penn Square's remodeling, which will include the food court, entrances, renovated restrooms and new retailers. Cost of the project is estimated at $5.3 million, according to city commercial building permit records.

Sara Sara Cupcakes owner Eric Smith said the store will offer a menu of about 10 rotating flavors of cupcakes, a signature milk bar and a T-shirt line, the sales of which raise money for the Sara Caroline Brinson Children's Heart Research Fund.
