Upset special: Northwestern over Texas A&M

Oklahoman Published: December 24, 2011

Northwestern is 0-3 against the Big 12 in bowl games, all played in Texas: 66-17 loss to Nebraska in the 2000 Alamo, 30-23 to Missouri in the 2008 Alamo and 45-38 to Texas Tech in the TicketCity last January.

But Northwestern never has played a program in such upheaval as the Aggies. A&M fired coach Mike Sherman after the regular season, named defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter interim head coach and hired Kevin Sumlin to replace Sherman.

Then Fresno State hired DeRuyter as head coach, and the Aggies faced the possibility of four head-coach figures in a span of a month. Thankfully, DeRuyter is staying on with the Aggies through the Meineke Car Care of Texas Bowl.

But that doesn't mean the Aggies will have much cohesion. Meanwhile, Northwestern has coach Pat Fitzgerald, who in his six seasons has kept the Wildcats competitive in the Big Ten (40-35).

The Aggies are 10-point favorites, but let's go with Northwestern in the upset.

Big 12 Upset Special record: 6-8
