MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) — Uruguay's Edinson Cavani scored in the 67th minute to salvage a 1-1 draw against Ecuador on Tuesday in South American World Cup qualifying.

Both teams are battling near the top of the South American standings. Ecuador improved to 13 points and defending South American champion Uruguay has 12.

Felipe Caicedo gave Ecuador a 1-0 lead with a 6th minute penalty. Caicedo also scored from a penalty Friday in Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Bolivia.

Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda was happy with the point, particularly playing on an away pitch.

"We played a tough team that has lots of potential," Rueda said. "It was important to get a point as the visiting team. We had two or three chances to win the game."

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was not as pleased.

"We didn't play well, except for during a few stretches," Tabarez said.
