U.S. substitute Chioma Ubogagu scored early in extra time, connecting on a header off Crystal Dunn's pass in the 98th minute.

The U.S. will play Nigeria in the semifinals on Tuesday, while Germany will play Japan.

The North Koreans pressed after Ubogagu's goal but couldn't tie it in the remaining 22 minutes of extra time.

"We knew it was going to be a competitive match and it was," U.S. coach Steve Swanson said. "I have a lot of respect for North Korea, they played a great game. Our players played a tremendous game and we're happy to be moving on."

Vanessa Di Bernardo gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute when she took control of a failed clearance and fired a long-range shot past North Korean goalkeeper O Chang Ran.

Sub Kim Su Gyong tied it for North Korea in the 75th when she took a pass and beat U.S. goalkeeper Bryane Heaberline with an angled shot into the top corner.

Germany, bidding to become the first team to win consecutive titles, took control against Norway with three goals in the first 20 minutes.

Japan's senior team beat Germany 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 World Cup before defeating the U.S. to claim the title.
