OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A federal appeals court has rejected the appeal of an Oklahoma death row inmate convicted of first-degree murder for the 1987 fatal shooting of a U.S. Air Force sergeant in Oklahoma County.

The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals handed down the decision Thursday in the case of 53-year-old Michael Wayne Howell. Howell was sentenced to death for the Nov. 2, 1987, shooting death of 23-year-old Sgt. Charlene Calhoun in the parking lot of a Del City apartment complex.

Howell also faces a death sentence in Tennessee for the murder of a Memphis convenience store clerk, Alvin Kennedy, who was shot in the head less than 24 hours before Calhoun was killed.

Howell is currently housed on death row at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tenn.
