The USA-Portugal game set a soccer record in the States, according to ESPN.

ESPN's telecast of Sunday's 2-2 tie between the U.S. and Portugal averaged 18.2 million viewers, surpassing the previous high in the U.S. of 17.975 million viewers for the 1999 Women's World Cup final between the U.S. and China on ABC.

According to espnmediazone.com, the match is ESPN's most-viewed program, excluding NFL and college football telecasts.

The first U.S. match of the World Cup against Ghana last week averaged 11,093,000 viewers -- making it the most viewed men's soccer match on ESPN or ESPN2 on record at that time ... until Sunday's thriller.

The U.S. has at least one more chance to break a ratings record this World Cup against Germany (11 a.m., ESPN) on Thursday. If the U.S. wins or ties, it will advance to the Round of 16.
