Utilities seek OK to buy Harrison County plant
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — MonPower and Potomac Edison are seeking state approval to buy a Harrison County power plant from Allegheny Energy Supply.
The two companies also are asking the Public Service Commission to approve a temporary surcharge to cover costs related to the acquisition.
Allegheny Energy Supply owns 80 percent of the plant and MonPower owns 20 percent. All three companies are owned by Ohio-based FirstEnergy.
MonPower and Potomac Edison spokesman Todd Meyers tells media outlets that MonPower needs to replace generating capacity that it lost in September when it de-activated three older power plants.
The PSC's Consumer Advocate Division is reviewing the companies' filing. Director Byron Harris says the proposed transaction could be the best way to meet customers' future needs. But he's concerned about the impact on rates.
