Super 30: Anadarko's Tramayne Wauahdooah makes 'something big' out of second chance
By Cody Stavenhagen, Staff Writer | Jul 12, 2014ANADARKO — Tramayne Wauahdooah has a story to tell, and he’s not hiding it from anyone. Unlike most of the other top high school football players in the state, this story is not about how he’s excited for his senior year. It’s also not about how he hit so hard in peewee football that he got kicked out of games. Not even about how he tore his meniscus his sophomore year when he was leading the state in rushing, but put on four knee braces and finished the game. It doesn’t involve how he’ll move back to tailback full time this season while still playing linebacker. It has little to do with the fact that he is one of the state’s hardest-hitting defenders, that he’s trying to help Anadarko win a third state title in four years, that he has offers from TCU, Texas Tech, Houston, Wyoming, Tulsa and Toledo, or that the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Kansas State are still recruiting him. No. Wauahdooah wants to tell a story about how it often takes fire to turn a boy into a man. But his story does start at that Week 3 game against Perry when he tore his meniscus and played through it. The following Sunday, he tried to cut, but couldn’t. Still, he went out to Anadarko’s next practice. Coach Kent Jackson made him sit out and get treatment. He missed three weeks. “It tore me to pieces,” Wauahdooah said. It was the breaking point in a much more complex situation. Here’s an abridged version: A couple of years earlier, Wauahdooah’s mother and the man he had come to call father got a divorce. That sent Wauahdooah’s mother into a time filled with stress and personal demons of her own. As an only child, that took its toll on Wauahdooah. He said despite never drinking, never being into that scene, he started smoking marijuana. “That was the only thing that could take my stress away,” he said. But that release still wasn’t enough “I was to the point I didn’t want to be here,” Wauahdooah said. “I felt like the whole world was against me. In class, I wouldn’t talk to teachers. They’d ask me questions, I wouldn’t talk to them. I was by myself on the field, I was always about me. I didn’t care about my teammates.” After getting yelled at by coaches, fighting with his mother and eventually failing a drug test, Wauahdooah woke up. In doing so, he grew up, and Anadarko coach Clint Jackson gave him another chance. “I don’t really know where I would stand without him,” Wauahdooah said. “Giving me another chance woke me up completely. You don’t get too many chances with him. I can say I got an extra chance with him, and I cherished it, I took it and I made something big out of it.” By doing something big, he means getting his life in order and putting on a junior season where he unleashed havoc on opposing offenses. “He knocks somebody out every game,” Jackson said. “He’s the most physical player I’ve ever coached. All the college scouts that have come through, they’ve used words like ferocious hitter and physical. He doesn’t weigh but 190 pounds, but he’s fast and he just has that ability to hit. That’s something you can’t coach.” And though his journey to this point has been deeper and more complicated than it is for most, his overarching goals are the same as any high schooler. He wants to win a third state title, keep his grades up, play in college and make his family and the Anadarko community proud. He wants to make the most of this second chance. “When I did go through that stuff, I didn’t feel like it, but there was a lot of people behind me,” Wauahdooah said. “That’s when I realized I wasn’t going to set myself up for failure. “I finally woke up and realized what was real and what was in front of me instead of looking at the past.”

Four juniors received their first Division I scholarship offers last week, including Oklahoma State's offer to Norman North quarterback John Kolar.
High school notebook: Norman North's John Kolar, Westmoore's Dahu Green pick up first offers
By Scott Wright and Jacob Unruh | Feb 16, 2014Football recruiting is gaining steam quickly for the state's 2015 class. Four juniors received their first Division I scholarship offers last week, including Oklahoma State's offer to Norman North quarterback John Kolar. The athletic, strong-armed Kolar, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, was the Timberwolves' starter for the second half of the season after now-Alabama freshman David Cornwell was injured. Kolar threw for 1,675 yards and 15 TDs with just two interceptions, completing 64.9 percent of his passes. Westmoore receiver Dahu Green, 6-3, 190, picked up two offers, from Louisville and Tulsa, following his junior season in which he had 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. Louisville could begin to show more involvement on the Oklahoma recruiting scene than in years past, with former OU quarterback Garrick McGee now working as the school's offensive coordinator. McGee has recruited the state hard at all of his college stops, including Arkansas and Alabama-Birmingham. Anadarko's Tramayne Wauahdooah, a 6-3, 200-pound linebacker, received an offer from Tulsa, according to the Oklahoma High School Sports Express. And Rivals.com reported that Del City's versatile athlete Davion Freeman, 5-10, 160, has been offered by North Texas. In all, 10 players in the 2015 class have reported Division I offers so far. OSSAA INCREASES REIMBURSEMENT FOR BASKETBALL SECURITY The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association board of directors voted Wednesday to increase the amount reimbursed to schools hosting district and regional tournaments in basketball for security purposes. Schools hosting districts will now receive an additional $50 per game. Schools hosting regionals will receive $75 per game, increasing the game-day reimbursement total of $392,468 by around $78,000. Additionally, the OSSAA reimburses around $385,000 for other expenses to schools during the basketball playoffs. That was just one change the board approved among others. *The OSSAA reimbursed $470,643 to schools in the football playoffs this past season. *Enduro Timing was awarded the contract to run timing services in the spring's state track championships. The former company, Precision Timing, is no longer in business. *The board of directors has elected to record votes in a roll-call fashion starting at March's meeting. The OSSAA has come under fire the past few months from the Oklahoma legislature for not following that procedure. MUSTANG CHEERLEADER RELEASED, DOING WELL Mustang freshman cheerleader Kailee James, who was injured Friday night during the Mustang-Edmond Santa Fe boys basketball game, was released from the hospital with no injuries Saturday morning, according to the Mustang Times. James was injured when she landed awkwardly on her head while performing during a timeout. The game was stopped for 45 minutes while Mustang administrators and medical personnel tended to her on the court. Before she left the gym, she was said to be moving all of her limbs, and the ambulance took her to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

White has 1,116 yards and 13 touchdowns through three weeks of the Class 3A football playoffs.
High school notebook: Seminole's Papi White still running wild
BY SCOTT WRIGHT AND JACOB UNRUH, Staff Writers | Dec 1, 2013Seminole running back Papi White rushed for 303 yards in Friday's 43-28 win at Hilldale in the Class 3A quarterfinals — which would statistically be defined as White's “worst” game of the playoffs. The 303 yards and four touchdowns hardly compares to the state playoff record of 466 yards he had in the first round, and still falls behind his second-round total of 347 yards. That brings his playoff total to 1,116 yards and 13 touchdowns — a good season for many backs. The 303 yards also took White over 3,000 for the season with 38 rushing touchdowns. White and the Chieftains will face another top back in Class 3A this week, facing Kingfisher in the semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Choctaw High School. Kingfisher is led by Landon Nault, a four-year starter who has rushed for 2,199 yards and 44 touchdowns this year. LONG ROAD BACK TO FINALS FOR POTEAU Friday will mark Poteau's third appearance in a football state championship game, but only a small portion of the town's population would likely remember the first two. Poteau is 0-2 in finals appearances, both in Class B. The Pirates first reached the finals in 1946, losing to Fairview 14-6 at Taft Stadium. They returned to the finals in 1950, when the Pirates were defeated by Sayre 39-21 at Owen Field in Norman. Sixth-ranked Poteau (12-1) will face undefeated and top-ranked Anadarko at 1 p.m. Friday at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater for the Class 4A title. NORMAN NORTH'S BARRETT SIXTH AN FOOT LOCKER EVENT Ben Barrett, recently named The Oklahoman's All-City Cross Country Runner of the Year, qualified for the Foot Locker National Finals with his performance Saturday in a regional event. Barrett ran a time of 14:51 at the regional in Charlotte, N.C., to finish sixth. The top 10 boys from the event qualified to compete against runners from the three other regionals at the Foot Locker National finals on Dec. 14 at Balboa Park in San Diego.
The Oklahoman's Scott Wright was honored Tuesday by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett for his work with The Children's Center in Bethany.
High school notebook: Oklahoman's Scott Wright honored for work with The Children's Center
BY JACOB UNRUH AND SCOTT WRIGHT | Oct 29, 2013The Oklahoman's Scott Wright was honored Tuesday by Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett for his work with The Children's Center in Bethany. Wright has written numerous articles on The Children's Center, a private, nonprofit pediatric hospital that serves children with complex medical and physical disabilities, and the annual Children's Center Bowl. Wright serves on The Children’s Center’s media committee, which was recognized on Tuesday for its efforts. Also honored as part of the committee were Paul Folger and Abigail Ogle of KOCO, La’Tasha Givens of KFOR, Chris McKinnon of KWTV, Jeff George of KOKH and JaNiece Cranmer of KSBI. The group is headed by Travis Doussette, the communications director at The Children’s Center. Each member of the committee was presented a plaque for Media Award, Public Service Materials. The award was presented to “recognize and honor excellence in media materials concerning persons with disabilities produced and placed in the media during the year. The articles concerned people with disabilities who are depicted in an empowered and positive manner.” CUSHING'S STALLWORTH, SEMINOLE'S WHITE TO CLASH FRIDAY A few weeks ago, Cushing football coach Barrett Shupe called running back Gage Stallworth the “best-kept secret in the state.” But it's hard to keep 33 touchdowns a secret. Stallworth has rushed for 33 TDs and 1,527 yards so far in his stellar senior season for fifth-ranked Cushing. Of course, this week will be a little different. The Tigers take on third-ranked Seminole in a showdown of Class 3A unbeatens. And Seminole comes into the game with a 1,500-yard back of its own. Papi White leads the Chieftains with 1,573 yards and 18 touchdowns, averaging 15.7 yards per carry. “He just glides along,” Seminole coach Mike Snyder said. “He makes people miss better than any running back we've had.” Both players appear to have college futures ahead of them. Stallworth is being recruited both as a football player and wrestler. White's recruiting has been somewhat limited by his size at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds. But Snyder said Tulsa and some other smaller programs continue to show interest in him. ANADARKO'S BOARDINGHAM SHINES VS. PIEDMONT Anadarko defensive end Malik Boardingham was a big reason the top-ranked Warriors shut out Piedmont 27-0 on Friday. He had two sacks and six tackles, but he also wreaked havoc in other ways. He batted down three passes at the line and recorded four quarterback hurries. Anadarko (8-0, 5-0 District 4A-1) hosts Weatherford on Friday. BISHOP SETS RECORD IN WINNING RED RIVER CHALLENGE Edmond Memorial's Jacob Bishop fired a 63 Sunday to win the Red River Challenge at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore. The score broke the event record of 64, set by PGA Tour rookie sensation Jordan Spieth. Bishop McGuinness' Alexis Sadeghy finished second in the girls' division with a 73, one stroke behind Evelyn Arguelles of Mexico. SW COVENANT STILL ALIVE AFTER UPSET Southwest Covenant's playoff chances are still alive after last week's 20-19 upset of Maud, a team that had been ranked in The Oklahoman's Class C top 10 much of the season. Up next for Southwest Covenant is another previously ranked opponent, Webbers Falls, which visits the Yukon school Friday night. Southwest Covenant trailed Maud 19-12 in the fourth quarter last week when quarterback Nick Sitton threw his third touchdown of the game, a 41-yarder to Braden Brown. He then connected with Brown on the game-winning two-point conversion as well. At 4-4 overall and 2-3 in District C-4, the Patriots can move into a tie for fourth with a win over Webbers Falls this week. They close the regular season against Bokoshe, which is currently winless in district play. DALKE NAMED JUNIOR ALL-AMERICAN Sixteen-year-old Brad Dalke of Hobart has been named a Rolex Junior All-America golfer for the third straight year, it was announced Tuesday. Dalke, who has been verbally committed to Oklahoma since he was 12, won two AJGA Invitational events, the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods and the Ping Invitational at Karsten Creek in Stillwater. The son of Hobart football coach Bill Dalke, Brad also reached the semifinals of the Polo Golf Junior Classic and had two other top-10 finishes in national competition. He is ranked No. 2 nationally in the AJGA Polo Golf Rankings.
The Oklahoman's staff and others provided coverage of Friday's games, including Deer Creek-Guthrie, Norman-Edmond Santa Fe and Edmond Memorial-Southmoore.
