Bridge Creek High School Varsity Boys Football

Oklahoma basketball: Ryan Spangler's hard-earned toughness sets tone for Sooners
BY RYAN ABER Staff Writer email@example.com | Feb 21, 2014NORMAN — The last time Ryan Spangler went against Kansas State, he came out of the game with a bloodied scratch on his neck, courtesy of a Wildcats defender. “They've got to do something to get him off the boards,” teammate Cam Clark said. “That's not going to faze him, getting scratched or elbowed. He's still going to go and that's what we need from him.” Spangler also came out of that game with 21 points and 14 rebounds, further cementing his place as the player who sets the tone for Oklahoma, especially defensively. The Sooners lost that game, though. Saturday, they get another chance at the Wildcats, hosting Kansas State at 3 p.m. at Lloyd Noble Center. If Oklahoma wins this time, there's a good chance Spangler will have plenty to do with it and there's a good chance his grit inside will come into play. “If we didn't have that, I don't know where we'd be,” Sooners coach Lon Kruger said. “Ryan's affected everyone's physicality, their toughness. That's been contagious to the rest of the team.” That toughness was born growing up the son of a high school football coach who now works the oil fields. It was strengthened being the youngest of three boys — Spangler's older brothers both played college football. “They always used to beat me up when I was younger,” Spangler said. “And when I was little, if I wasn't being tough — if I cried — they would always gripe at me and try to get me better.” And then it was honed throughout the last three years, first as a two-sport star at Bridge Creek, then as a freshman at Gonzaga, and now in Norman. In the 2011 Class 4A state title game, Spangler got a rare game against players who matched his size. Douglass' Marquis Buxton-Hill was 6-foot-9, brothers Romond and Ramond Jenkins 6-foot-6. Douglass, led by Stevie Clark, won that game but Spangler did everything he could, scoring 28 and pulling down 18 rebounds. “They started off man-on-man with Ryan and then they put two on him and by the fourth quarter they had three guys on him,” said Ryan Spangler's father Larry. “That's when I saw that he was pretty tough.” At Gonzaga, it developed thanks to daily battles in practice with 7-footers Robert Sacre and, to a lesser degree, Kelly Olynyk. “If they were going to get into the lane, I'd hit them or I was going to get dunked on all the time,” Spangler said. “It's hard to move a 280-pound man (Sacre) that's as strong as him.” Then when Spangler arrived in Norman, sitting out a year, the toughness kept right on building. He spent much of last season guarding Romero Osby in practice. “Guarding Ro, you've got to be fast guarding him but you've got to be tough too,” Spangler said. “Last year was a big steppingstone for me becoming tough and not letting anybody push me around.” In several games during Big 12 play — the game at Kansas State, the home win over Iowa State and both Bedlam wins especially — Spangler has had stretches of dominance on both ends. “Every time he goes on little spurts when he keeps getting boards and stuff, it's like an energy boost for the team,” D.J. Bennett said. “We feed off his hard work.”

High school notebook: OSSAA approves new football districts
BY JACOB UNRUH AND SCOTT WRIGHT | Oct 9, 2013The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association board of directors approved the new football districts for the 2014-2015 seasons on Wednesday, finalizing the new divisions in Class 6A. In 6A Division I, Jenks and Broken Arrow are in the same district as Edmond Memorial, Edmond Santa Fe, Norman, Putnam City, Westmoore and Yukon. Tulsa Union and Owasso are aligned with Edmond North, Moore, Mustang, Norman North, Owasso, PC North and Southmoore. Division II is an East-West split, with Stillwater going west and Ponca City going east. New additions to Class 4A, Newcastle and Tuttle, discovered their destinations. Newcastle will be in District 4A-1, a west district. Tuttle is heading east in District 4A-2. Douglass also falls to Class 3A, aligning in District 3A-2 with Bethany, Blanchard, Bridge Creek, John Marshall, Mount St. Mary and Meeker. Pioneer and Merritt are also falling to Class B. A full list of the districts can be found on Page 5B. FALLOUT FROM INTERIM STUDY The OSSAA board of directors spent portions of Wednesday's meeting discussing the recent legislative study and Supreme Court ruling regarding the organization, even going into executive session for more than an hour to open the meeting. The board did vote to approve an immediate change as a result of the interim study. It will now be clearer presenting reasons in letters as to why it has approved or denied a hardship, eligibility or appeal. The board also decided not to ask for reconsideration from the Supreme Court on its 7-2 ruling last week involving Sequouyah-Tahlequah football players who were ruled ineligible for participating in individual camps funded by the school. The OSSAA was also recommended to pay back $25,000 in legal fees to the school, and the board approved to do so. Also, the OSSAA plans to appeal former Sequoyah-Tahlequah quarterback Brayden Scott and his attorney Chad Smith's request for legal fees. BRAY-DOYLE, BOARD REACH AGREEMENT The Bray-Doyle football team reached an agreement with the OSSAA board of directors that will allow it to forfeit its upcoming games should it not have enough players to field an 11-man team and its scheduled opponent does not wish to play with just eight players. The Donkeys started the season with 25 players, but they have lost some players to injuries and others have quit. They have now just 13 active players if everybody is cleared to play, but at one point last week they were playing with just nine players. First-year coach Lee Bluejacket told the board that he is concerned for his players' safety with the declining numbers. Bray-Doyle has already forfeited its game this week with Velma-Alma. The Donkeys, who are slated to play in Class B next season already, will look to play against independent eight-man teams if they forfeit their regularly scheduled game. SANTA FE SOUTH AMONG PRE-STATE MEET WINNERS The Santa Fe South boys cross country team joined the Norman North and Shawnee girls as team champions in the pre-state cross country meets held last weekend at Edmond Santa Fe. Most impressively, Santa Fe South won the boys 4A meet despite having its top runner finish 13th overall, with Deangelo Robles clocking in at 18:11.86. Santa Fe South totaled 70 points with Plainvew second at 83. Del City's Kadijah Almarales won the 5A girls overall title at 13:19.76, but it was Shawnee, led by fourth-place finisher Maddie Rutherford at 13:49.08 that took the team honors with 43 points. Pryor was second at 47. Norman North's Abbey Mace was third overall in the 6A girls meet and her team had five of the top 15 finishers to compile 50 points, with Norman High second at 58. THREE LOCAL GOLFERS IN JUNIOR ALL-STAR INVITATIONAL Three young metro-area golfers will take part in the Junior All-Star Invitational being held Friday-Monday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman. The event, which has players from all across the country, as well as China, Japan, South Korea, Mexico and South America, is only open to 48 boys and 25 girls. Newcastle freshman Dalton Daniel is the only boy from Oklahoma in the field, while a pair of Norman residents will take part in the girls event. Freshman Kaitlin Milligan and seventh-grader Yujeong Son will both compete in the four-day event.
Outlaws lose just five games over the summer. Run through state tournament with relative ease.
High school notebook: Outlaws headed to American Legion regionals
BY SCOTT WRIGHT AND JACOB UNRUH, Staff Writers | Aug 7, 2013The Oklahoma Outlaws won the American Legion state baseball tournament last week and open the American Legion regional on Thursday in Little Rock, Ark. Entering the state tournament, the Outlaws had lost just five games over the summer. Then they ran through the tournament with relative ease, beating their opponents by an average score of 17-4 over a four-game span. They were unable to play the championship game against the Southwest Shockers due to inclement weather. The Outlaws open the five-day regional at 9:30 a.m. against Tennessee. If they win the regional, they advance to the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C. The Outlaws won the World Series in 2010. HUGO LOSES FOOTBALL COACH With football practice set to begin Monday, Hugo is scrambling to find a football coach. Terry Shamley handed in his resignation on Monday, according to a report from KXII-TV. No reason was given for his resignation. BERRYHILL'S SMITH COMMITS TO TULSA Tulsa landed its ninth verbal commitment from the 2014 class and the sixth in-state prospect, adding Berryhill defensive end Jeremy Smith on Tuesday. Smith, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound senior, also had an offer from Memphis. Of the Golden Hurricanes' nine commits, Smith is the first purely defensive player. Tulsa McLain's Nigel Carter was recruited as an athlete, but could likely wind up at receiver. LOCALS HONORED AT NUC CAMP Two metro-area football players were award winners at the recent National Underclassmen Combine Ultimate 100 elite camp. Logan Price, a 6-foot-3, 204-pounder who will be a junior at Putnam City North this fall, was named the tight end MVP of this class. Edmond North junior Richard Morrison, 5-foot-10, 171 pounds, was named the wide receiver MVP for his class. FORMER OU COMMIT HAMMOND MOVES TO COMANCHE Jacob Hammond, a highly recruited 6-foot-11 basketball standout, will attend Comanche High School for his senior season, according to Internet reports. Hammond played for Duncan as a freshman and the OKC Storm as a sophomore. He verbally committed to Oklahoma before his junior year but decomitted near the end of the season, which he played at Sunrise Christian in Kansas. He was expected to play for the new Oklahoma City prep school, United Prep, for the upcoming year, until Tuesday's reports surfaced of his move to Comanche. In addition to OU, Hammond has offers from Texas Tech and Nebraska. REIMERS TAKES OVER AT BRIDGE CREEK Kirk Reimers had wanted to coach in a larger class. After years at Snyder, Moss and Amber-Pocasset, he is getting his chance. He was named Bridge Creek's girls basketball coach over the summer. “It's just a better fit,” Reimers said. “I hated to leave those girls over (at Amber-Pocasset), but then again I had the ambition to coach the bigger school. “I really like the prognosis from what I've got to see.” Reimers and his wife Jacque recently adopted a baby boy, which caused Reimers to decide he wants to focus on coaching just one sport. At previous schools, he coached multiple sports, including baseball and softball. They also live in Tuttle, and did so while coaching at Amber-Pocasset. The move to Bridge Creek allows them to remain in their current location. Bridge Creek returns a senior-laden team, Reimers said. “The girls are really starting to come along as far as understanding what I want and what I like, understand the tempo we're going to play and what we're going to try to do,” Reimer said. “I'm really excited about it. I'm anxious. I wish we were starting tomorrow.” BY SCOTT WRIGHT AND JACOB UNRUH
