WILLISTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Gas says it has chosen a contractor to begin construction on a 41-mile extension of its natural gas pipeline from Chittenden County to Middlebury and Vergennes.

The company announced Monday it had chosen Engineers Construction of Williston to construct Phase 1 of the Addison Rutland Natural Gas Project.

The company says the agreement focuses on horizontal directional drilling, which can bury pipelines without digging ditches. The technique is designed to help protect environmentally and archaeological sensitive areas along the route.

Construction is expected to begin in June.
