MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is giving the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant positive reviews for its performance last year.

Bill Dean, the agency's Northeast regional administrator, is in Brattleboro for meetings Tuesday and Wednesday and tells The Associated Press that while there were some issues at the plant, none was significant enough to warrant stepped up inspections or other regulatory action.

Dean says there is one area for special emphasis this year: Vermont Yankee is shutting down at the end of 2014, and Dean says inspections will focus on making sure the plant is not slacking off on safety procedures as it approaches its closing date.

Vermont Yankee spokesman Rob Williams says operating safely between now and the plant's closing will be what he calls "our measure of success."
