Checotah native Carrie Underwood, an 11-time Academy of Country Music Award winner, co-penned a song specifically for the academy’s military tribute show, "ACM Presents: All-Star Salute to the Troops," which will air at 8 tonight on the CBS Television Network.
Underwood's performance of “Keep Us Safe” will debut during the broadcast, co-hosted by "NCIS: Los Angeles" stars LL Cool J and Chris O'Donnell. Coinciding with her performance, the song will be available digitally with proceeds benefiting ACM Lifting Lives, the charitable arm of the academy.
“When we were approached to be a part of the show, I was so excited to do something to honor our troops and because ACM Lifting Lives does such great work. I wanted to take the time to really think about what song I wanted to perform,” says Underwood in a news release.
“I had a writing session scheduled with my co-writers and friends Hillary Lindsey, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally, and I guess the show was weighing on my mind. I think we all left the session knowing the song was special because it basically wrote itself that day!”
In addition to being a three-time ACM Top Female Vocalist, in 2010 Underwood became the first female artist to win ACM Entertainer of the Year twice.
Along with Underwood, Norman denizen Toby Keith, Tishomingo residents Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Rascal Flatts (which includes Picher-bred guitarist Joe Don Rooney), Dierks Bentley, Lee Brice, Luke Bryan, Merle Haggard, Hunter Hayes, Tim McGraw, Kellie Pickler, George Strait, Keith Urban, Eli Young Band, Florida Georgia Line, Lady Antebellum and The Band Perry will perform and pay tribute to our country’s remarkable all-volunteer military force on tonight's "ACM Presents: An All-Star Salute to the Troops." Many of the artists were joined on stage by service members from the United States Armed Force during the two-hour concert event, taped Monday, April 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in honor of Armed Forces Day (May 17). In addition to performing during the taping, Keith was surprised on stage by United Service Organization CEO, retired Brig. Gen. John Pray, who presented the Oklahoma superstar with the Spirit of the USO honor in recognition of his many USO tours and longtime support of our U.S. military.
