Late in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, Oklahoma fans got their first look at the application of the new targeting rule.
Oklahoma senior safety Gabe Lynn hit Tulsa running back Trey Watts in the end zone on a third-down play. Lynn was flagged for targeting and ejected from the game.
The play was reviewed and Lynn’s ejection was overturned, but–by rule–the penalty was not.
The Sooners were called for offsides on the play, which would’ve resulted in a third and 5 for the Sooners. Instead, the Golden Hurricane had first and goal from the 6.
Tulsa scored two plays later.
