For families of children with autism or other sensory disorders, there are two special events planned today to let those youngsters enjoy a new movie and live music.

The Warren Theatre in Moore has started showing movies for children with autism or sensory disorders. People who go to these showings will notice the theater is not completely dark and the volume of the movie isn’t as loud. Also, there aren’t previews or advertisements, reports The Oklahoman health reporter Jaclyn Cosgrove.

Most important, the showing is kid friendly — talking, wiggling, standing and dancing are entirely acceptable behaviors for miniature moviegoers.

This month’s movie is “Monsters University,” showing at 11 a.m. today. Ticket prices are $7. Tickets are only available at the theater’s ticket office.

In Norman, the Music Moves Mountains Foundation’s “All Abilities Rock” program is offering another sensory-friendly concert at 3 pm. today at Sonder Music. This month’s featured artist will be Kyle Reid, who will be performing a stripped-down, intimate set of jazz and classic songs.

This concert series is designed to serve special populations of children with developmental disorders such as Autism, Asperger’s, and Sensory Processing Disorder as well as other challenges, but all children and families are welcome. The purpose of the All Abilities Rock program is to provide alternative opportunities for kids of all abilities to access music, therapy and education in a safe, understanding environment with experienced professionals. It also serves as another avenue to promote self-expression, creativity, and fun times without judgment or extra pressure. Contact julie.frost@musicmovesmountains.org for more information.
