MADRID (AP) — The Spanish league disciplinary committee has fined Villarreal 4,000 euros ($5,500) after a spectator caused a delay of game by throwing a smoke bomb with tear gas-like effects onto the field.
The game between host Villarreal and Celta Vigo at El Madrigal Stadium on Saturday was temporarily stopped after the device was thrown in the 87th minute, forcing the 13,322 fans to evacuate and players to ask for water as it apparently irritated their eyes.
Villarreal is still trying to identify the perpetrator.
Celta eventually won 2-0.
Villarreal will pay homage to those fans who were forced to exit at its next home league match, on March 2.
