Edmond Santa Fe new No. 1
A wild weekend in Tulsa resulted in Edmond Santa Fe jumping to the top of the Class 6A volleyball coaches’ rankings this week.
Santa Fe lost 3-1 to host Union in pool play of the Union Invitational, but the Wolves didn’t lose a set the rest of the tournament, including a 3-0 win over Union in the finals. Santa Fe also topped then-No. 1 Edmond Memorial at a tournament that served as a gauge for several of 6A’s best teams.
Union is ranked second in the first in-season poll, with Memorial, Jenks and Owasso concluding the top five.
Southeast on the rise
An Oklahoma City volleyball program has been quietly gaining momentum over the last two seasons and might be ready for a jump into the spotlight.
Southeast finished last season 22-3, falling out of the playoffs in the regional round. And this season has started well, with a 9-1 record and a No. 9 ranking in this week’s Class 5A coaches’ poll.
The Spartans will have a chance to prove themselves over the next week, particularly in a Tuesday match against McAlester, ranked fifth in 5A.
Strong start for McGuinness
As Class 5A looks for someone to challenge two-time defending state champ Tulsa Bishop Kelley, Bishop McGuinness might be up for the challenge. The Irish moved to No. 3 in the 5A rankings this week after a 4-1 start that included wins over a pair of top-10 teams in 6A, Stillwater and Putnam City.
The only loss for McGuinness came to 6A’s top team, Edmond Santa Fe.
