LONDON (AP) — Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday.

Walcott returned to his club, Arsenal, after waking on Monday morning with an unspecified illness.

"Theo has picked up some sort of virus," coach Roy Hodgson said. "He was quite violently ill last night."

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge missed training Monday because of stomach cramps, but medics say they are hopeful he will be fit for the match at Wembley Stadium.

"I can only hope nothing is going round the squad," Hodgson said. "That was why we were quite keen to get Theo home as soon as possible and also keep Daniel away from the squad. I have to hope it's just an isolated case with the two players."

Hodgson has now lost five players from his original squad to injury, and has decided to call up Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana, Tottenham midfielder Jake Livermore and Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling.

"It was a good opportunity to invite some young players to come in and be part of the atmosphere," Hodgson said. "We still have enough good players to be able to deal with the game, but it's always good when you have the chance to invite these players to come in and see how things are."

England opened its bid to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with a 5-0 victory in Moldova on Friday.
