Warm weather forces temporary closure of holiday ice rink in Norman

The rink, which opened Nov. 23, was closed Monday because temperatures were not expected to drop low enough at night to keep the rink open, said spokeswoman Karen Cody.

“Our goal now is to reopen Wednesday if possible,” Cody said.

An open house planned for Tuesday has been postponed until next Monday, Cody said. The open house will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday with a special performance by the Oklahoma City Skating Club.

The rink is scheduled to be open through Jan. 6 at Interstate 35 and E Lindsey Street.

Proceeds from the outdoor rink will benefit Assistance League of Norman, which sponsors such projects as Operation School Bell, the May Fair Arts Festival, Seniors R&R, Bears for Children, care kits and assault survivor kits.

When weather permits, the rink is open from noon to 9 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 7 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $10 with skate rental; $7 without skate rental; and $5 for children younger than 5. Wheelchairs and walkers are permitted on the ice with $7 admission. On Wednesdays, parents with strollers are allowed on the ice.
