New and veteran drivers alike are constantly reminded to not text and drive, whether it’s by family members, billboards or other public service announcements.
This PSA from Volkswagen has to be one of the most effective PSAs yet:
Let’s be real here: Nearly everyone and their mom texts while driving, but that doesn’t make it OK. It’s not my style to tell you what you should do, so I’m not going to sit here and do that when statistics can do the work for me:
- 1.3 million automobile crashes were attributed to texting in 2011
- In the five seconds it takes for you to look at your phone, you could have driven the length of a football field if driving at a minimum 55 mph
- Nearly 80 percent of young adults are so confident in their texting and driving abilities that they say they can do it safely
- But grown-ups do it, too, since nearly 50 percent of teens have said they’ve seen their parents texting or talking on the phone while driving
