Water quality alerts were issued Friday for parts of Kingfisher and Logan counties because high levels of nitrates were found in drinking water, according to the state Department of Environmental Quality.

Women who are pregnant or nursing and children younger than 6 months old should not drink water from the rural water district in that area. Nitrates in the water can cause blue baby syndrome, which is potentially fatal.

Adults can drink the water without health problems, according to the state agency.

Skylar McElhaney, spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Quality, said most of the nitrate contamination comes from animal manure, chemical fertilizer and human sewage that leaks from septic systems.
