RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Reynolds American Inc. is launching a new website aimed at raising awareness of cigarette trafficking.

The owner of the nation's second-biggest tobacco company says cigarette smuggling costs states an estimated $5.5 billion annually.

Most of the smuggling is taking place on the East Coast along Interstate 95, which the company is dubbing "the new Tobacco Road."

Low excise taxes have made the area an attractive base for smugglers who can sell smokes on the black market and funnel the profits to organized crime.

Reynolds says the site will feature studies and news reports as well as a blog by a recently retired federal agent that handled cigarette trafficking cases.

The site — — also will provide information on what governments can do to tackle the issue.
