Welcome to my world: Jerry Hughes, DE, TCU

Published: September 26, 2008
TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has had a remarkable start to his junior season.

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Hughes has even surprised himself. He was named the Mountain West Conference player of the week after collecting six tackles, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a 26-3 victory over New Mexico.

In last weekend's 48-7 win over SMU, Hughes returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown.

Hughes, a high school running back, talked to the Dallas Morning News about the TCU defense, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation coming into Saturday's game with Oklahoma.

We have a great group of guys together. Everybody's on the same page, and we have a great team chemistry.

I knew the defense itself was going to be great, I just didn't think I was going to be this good this early in the season.

I knew they wanted me to start at the defensive end position, because when (TCU's coaches) recruited me, they told me how awesome Tommy Blake was and what he was able to accomplish being an old high school running back like myself.
