WAURIKA — The West Nile virus has claimed its first state victim in two years — an elderly Jefferson County man who had other health problems, officials said.

→People 50 and older or those with chronic health problems are most at risk.

→About one in five people infected with West Nile get mild symptoms, which are similar to the flu, such as headache, fever and muscle weakness. One in 150 get more severe symptoms including paralysis, intense headaches, dizziness, stiff neck, marked weakness, muscle tremors, disorientation, confusion or convulsions. These could be signs the virus has brought on life-threatening conditions like meningitis and encephalitis.

→To avoid getting West Nile, stay indoors, especially during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are more likely to bite. Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon extract. Drain standing water from buckets, cans, pool covers and flowerpots.
