"At those
USA trials (for young rising players), that’s when he showed he could really play point guard,” Durant said. "I knew back then in (Las) Vegas it was going to be a good year for him.”
After playing well in preseason, Westbrook dished out a career-high 13 assists in the Thunder’s season opening 102-89 win over
Sacramento in the
Ford Center.
"His performance was unbelievable, probably the best game I’ve ever seen him play,” Durant said. "He handled the team so well. Even though he didn’t take as many shots as he normally does, he got some open shots because he got us the ball in good position.”
Almost as impressive as Westbrook’s 13 assists were his turnovers. He only had two.
"He has the ability to take the ball and score and get his own shot, but I’ve been impressed. He’s trying to do the right thing,” said teammate
Nick Collison. "He’s doing really well. Tonight, he looked great. There were even some small plays he might not get an assist but made the pass at the right time.”
Westbrook, a first-team All-Rookie selection last season, said he’s always trying to get teammates open looks, even if it means sacrificing a few shots.
"I don’t mind that,” Westbrook said. "I’d rather my teammates get involved before I get myself going. It was a learning process, me learning how to finding my teammates shots.”
Coach Scott Brooks said he doesn’t want Westbrook to think it’s an either/or proposition.
"He’s a scorer also,” Brooks said. "We don’t want to take that away from him. He did a great job mixing both in tonight. There’s a fine line between attacking for yourself and your teammates.”
