Western Heights Middle School offers training to help adults help students
A training session at Western Heights Middle School aims to get adults to spend an hour with a student per month to help improve academic performance.
Students at Western Heights Middle School will soon get a helping hand from parents and other adults in the community in an effort to boost the school's performance.
The school, at 8435 SW 44, received a D on its most recent state Department of Education performance evaluation. Subcategories such as math and reading received F grades.
The One Kid Challenge program has the goal of getting one adult to assist one student for one hour a month to help students overcome challenges they face in school.
The kickoff training session for volunteers will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, starting with a French toast breakfast. There also will be breakout training sessions in math and reading, along with guest speakers.
