Fifteen thousand empty seats for the biggest home game of the year.

Sounds like a bad deal for the Oklahoma State football program.

And it might be. Or it might not be.


For one, the Cowboys won’t have to deal with a heavy infiltration of Sooner fans for Saturday night’s Bedlam showdown.

And two, those 15,000 empty seats won’t necessarily look that bad, in person or on television.

For the season opener against Houston, the announced attendance was 45,001, but the stadium looked full in all but a few areas, because the empty seats were scattered throughout. And the TV cameras generally won’t pick up the vacant club seats at the top of the sideline sections.

But what the cameras don’t see, the broadcast team probably will. ABC play-by-play voice Brent Musberger always seems to harp on a few specific details throughout any game he covers.

And a stadium only 75 percent full for one of the biggest games in the history of a long-standing rivalry could be one such detail.
