“To me, they have a unique personality,” Wilson said. “They are a breed that will take up with anybody and everybody. We had one that used to follow the pizza delivery guy and get in his truck.”
More house dogs?
Bulldogs have been popular in pop culture recently, especially with hip-hop musicians. Wilson said bulldogs also have gotten more popular as people increasingly have kept their dogs indoors year-round.
“It seems like over the years a lot of the bigger breeds have become house dogs, and the bulldogs are maybe more amenable to that,” Wilson said. “They are not as hyper as a terrier or some of the retrievers. A bulldog will sit at your feet and nap when you are watching the ballgame.”
Bulldogs don't make good outside dogs because they aren't heat tolerant, Wilson said. They also bring some specific challenges. They are an expensive breed to buy and to raise. And they snore. Loudly.
If you can get past that, bulldogs are great companions, Wilson said.
“A lot of people who think of bulldogs think they are vicious,” Wilson said. “I think it's that macho look. But they are very friendly.”
