What are the most popular dog breeds among owners in Oklahoma City?

The American Kennel Club's list of the top dog breeds in Oklahoma City contains many familiar types, but having a rare breed can also bring joy, owners say.

Chances are, you've never heard of a Cesky terrier.

Tim Smith hopes that changes soon. Smith, of Jones, breeds Cesky terriers, one of the newest breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.

The club has released its list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in Oklahoma City, and it is full of the usual suspects — retrievers, Yorkshire terriers, German shepherds and the like.

Smith said there is something fun about having a dog that no one has ever heard of.

“They are rare,” Smith said. “I think that is a big draw for them. Not a lot of people have them. A lot of people like having something that other people don't.”

The Cesky terrier is a mix of several other terriers, including Scottish terriers, which they resemble. Smith said they don't shed. They are energetic, independent, but still loving and loyal.

“It's still your best friend, but with a little more kick to it,” Smith said.

The breed is seven years old and was accepted by the AKC two years ago.

Smith also breeds Wheaten terriers, which are more common than Cesky terriers, but still don't make the list of most popular breeds.

One breed that did make the cut is bulldogs. Joel Wilson, a veterinarian from Shawnee, has been breeding bulldogs for 30 years.

Wilson said there are some good reasons their popularity has increased in recent years.
