NORMANOklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, to the delight of Sooner fans, won’t be participating in this weekend’s NFL Draft.

More Info

NFL Draft
→When: Saturday and Sunday

→Where: Radio City Music Hall, New York

→TV: ESPN (Cox 29) and NFL Network (Cox 252)

→Coming tomorrow: Oklahoma State’s Brandon Pettigrew is widely considered the top tight end in the draft. We’ll take a look at his development and how he became the prototypical tight end.

Sooners in the draft
OU players who could be drafted in Saturday and Sunday’s NFL Draft:

Jon Cooper
Center, 6-2, 291

→The skinny: Cooper has put on a ton of weight since January, diminishing his primary negative: size. Teams will love his work ethic, technique and leadership, even if he is undersized.

→Draft projection: Sixth round

→Possible destinations: Buffalo, Cincinnati, Denver, Indianapolis, New England

Nic Harris
Safety/linebacker, 6-2, 234

→The skinny: Harris may not have a true position in the NFL, and a slow 4.85 time in the 40 didn’t help.

→Draft projection: Fifth round

→Possible destinations: Cleveland, Green Bay, Kansas City, New Orleans, Philadelphia

Lendy Holmes
Safety, 6-0, 206

→The skinny: Holmes’ lack of speed (4.65) appears to have dropped his value dramatically; ESPN’s Todd McShay predicts Holmes will be the last player taken in the entire draft.

→Draft projection: Seventh round

→Possible destinations: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Seattle

Juaquin Iglesias
Wide receiver, 6-1, 204

→The skinny: Iglesias doesn’t possess top-end speed, but his production in college won’t be overlooked.

→Draft projection: Third round

→Possible destinations: Baltimore, Dallas, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, St. Louis

Manny Johnson
Wide receiver, 5-11, 189

→The skinny: A hamstring injury has prevented him from working out in front of scouts; that probably leaves him undrafted, though he could be a priority free-agent pickup.

→Draft projection: Free agent

→Possible destinations: Cleveland, Dallas, Jacksonville, Oakland, Philadelphia

Phil Loadholt
Offensive tackle, 6-8, 332

→The skinny: His size is attractive, but it’s his potential as a dominant run blocker that will win over teams that lean on the power running game.

→Draft projection: Second round

→Possible destinations: Baltimore, Chicago, Minnesota, Oakland, Pittsburgh

Duke Robinson
Offensive guard, 6-5, 329

→The skinny: A mauler in the run game, Robinson will also be scooped up by someone interested in augmenting their power run attack.

→Draft projection: Third round

→Possible destinations: Atlanta, Buffalo, Dallas, Pittsburgh, San Diego

Brandon Walker
Offensive guard, 6-3, 306

→The skinny: Often overlooked by playing alongside Cooper, Loadholt and Robinson, Walker still was a productive player in college and that could catch someone’s attention.

→Draft projection: Free agent

→Possible destinations: Detroit, Kansas City, Miami, Seattle, Washington

But had he decided to leave early, how would Bradford have stacked up against Georgia’s Matthew Stafford — who is expected to go No. 1 to the Detroit Lions?

"Bradford would’ve been right in there,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. told The Oklahoman during a national conference call. "It’s easy to say he would’ve been the No. 1 pick.

"But when you go through this process, the scrutinization begins as we’ve seen, and you get picked apart.”

For that reason, it’s impossible to predict how scouts would’ve judged Bradford against Stafford or USC’s Mark Sanchez following the NFL’s rigorous scouting process.

Stafford boasts the strongest arm in this draft, but throws with questionable accuracy. Sanchez has been lauded for his decision-making, but with only 16 college starts, people wonder about his inexperience.

Bradford would’ve been dissected the same way, and scouts probably would’ve come away impressed with his accuracy, quick release and intelligence, but unsold with his physical durability and overall strength.

"Bradford would be right in the discussion,” said former Oklahoma State head coach Pat Jones, who was also an assistant with the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders in the NFL from 1996-2006.

"His anticipating, how he sees things, how quickly he computes things, to me is exceptional. But he’s not a real imposing guy. Another year of working and lifting will help him immensely. He’ll be way better prepared to cope with the NFL physically.”

That’s why Jones and Kiper both believe Bradford made the wise decision to return for another year of college, even though Bradford might have ended up as the top quarterback in this draft.

"It won’t be ending for him,” Kiper said. "But the scrutiny will be less because he’ll be a junior, a fourth-year junior.”

Jones compares Bradford now to Sooner basketball star Blake Griffin last year.

Had Griffin gone out as a freshman, he would’ve been a lottery pick. But having another year to mature physically and mentally at OU, Griffin has made himself into the top prospect in the NBA Draft this summer.

"If Bradford were in this draft, he wouldn’t be ready to start right away, and it doesn’t appear these other guys are ready, either,” Jones said. "None of them are talked about like a Troy Aikman, Dan Marino, Michael Vick, not in the family of those guys.”

With another year, however, Bradford could be viewed in 2010 the way Matt Ryan, a three-year starter at Boston College, was viewed in last year’s draft.

As a can’t-miss quarterback.

Said Jones, "Bradford is going to be a much better prospect next year.”

It's sad that the state of OK has so little news that we have to have "what if" stories.

Stupid mistkes are what causes OSU to lose all the time - they have a good team, but they make too many mistakes.
Lawerence, Oklahoma City - Apr 25, 2009 at 10:43 am
jampalbo, I am not going to try an argue past losses. OSU is a different football team from years past and I am going to enjoy seeing OSU give OU a run for their money this year. Stupid mistakes is what cost us the game last year.

Opinions are like hind ends. Everyone has one but no two are alike.
That is precisely why most of you will never agree on the sports items.

What if OU had won the NC game? Would Bradford still come back this year? He said he is having fun - why rush it. That was a great decision for him - his parents didn't pressure him, his family is not starving let his career take its course. He will be bigger and stronger, and most likely will take more hits this year to prepare for the NFL. He doesn't run much because he doesn't need to - he is patient and throws for a lot of yards. He is great at QB because he makes great decisions. He could be a great NFL QB or he might be a so so NFL QB, but he will play on Sundays. McCoy and Robinson will be lucky to make a back-up role.
Lawerence, Oklahoma City - Apr 24, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Adam and Danny, what if OSU loses to OU seven years in a row? I got a guess what we would hear "there was 3 turnovers that cost OSU the game...if you remember...the game was close until OU's defense converted on those turnovers." Does that count as a moral victory?
jampalbo, norman - Apr 24, 2009 at 4:21 pm
One last thing for Adam, Sam didn't get hurt tackling the Boise State player. Duke Robinson fell on his head. Nobody walks away from that. Credibility dude. Know what you're talking about.

Louis Friend, Norman - Apr 24, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Let's see, 6'4" by 210 and growing, near 4.0 student, AAU basketball player on the same team with Blake and Obi, scratch golfer, Heisman winner, bronze statue on order, humble and I'm betting he could put any of us on this board on our behind. No NFL QB is immune from getting killed by one of those guys. He's alot tougher than you are giving him credit for. If he was your guy your toon would be different and you know it.

Honestly, don't get me wrong about his athletic abilities...he is a good QB..but he is not NFL worthy. The guy can't run, he is small for a QB (in muscle size), and he isn't quick. He has a great O-line to protect him. Do you remember when he was hit during the BCS game and he was seein stars?? Imagine that hit by Ray Lewis or Urlacher...he won't stand a chance in the NFL. I don't think he can take a hit like the others.
Jason, Tulsa - Apr 24, 2009 at 3:28 pm
If Adam really believes Zac, or Colt for that matter - both good players, are better than Sam he has no credibility whatsoever. The Sooners will never win any popularity contest what with the ESPN annual love in for Tebow and McCoy. Therefore, everything Sam or the Sooners get is through the front door.

Can you afford a whole beer, Tim?
Man, that's really laying it on the line for your man, Sam.
By the way, there's nothing wrong with Sam being who he is. It's this stupid sports editor and his hacks that write this weak-arsed crap about "What if.." and junk like that. That's not professional journalism. You would see a high school publishing this same crap.
This paper is a joke and the only reason I read it is every so often, there's a diamond in the rough (usually an AP story) that appears about my team. It's rare this paper will ever write a decent story about OSU nor OU. It's just that most OU fans eat up any BS this paper puts out about their Swooners. Then they swallow it like it's fact.
Idiots.

Tim, there was 3 turnovers that cost OSU the game...if you remember...the game was close until OU's defense converted on those turnovers. Bradford DID NOT create all 60 points.
Jason, Tulsa - Apr 24, 2009 at 3:03 pm
What if OU-Texas was relevant? If Texas wins this year's RRSO I'll still feel confident the Sooners will be in Arlington repping the Big XII South.....
Ed Lova, Oklahoma City - Apr 24, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Well, Zac didn't win any trophy obviously but Colt McCoy won his BCS game...I know that you know that Tebow won his BCS trophy. I was stating these QBs are more rounded QBs than Bradford. Bradford won't make it in the NFL because the guy can't take a hit. The only hit I saw him take is when he did that cartwheel during the OSU game. AND OSU's total offense was a couple hundred yard behing OU's and that is with OSU playing one less game than OU. Bradford is not as good as you sooner fans think.
Jason, Tulsa - Apr 24, 2009 at 3:01 pm
And Adam, he really looked like a little pansy last year in stillwater putting 6o+ points on your little boys asses. I'd hate to see what a good QB would have done.

I don't know what the problem is with some you guys. The NFL draft is this weekend. OU doesn't have any projected first-rounders. That makes this story relevant. Yeesh.

Ya Adam, Zack and Colt have lots of trophies to show off. Last time I checked, neither one has won anything. As for Tebow, he got his, now Sam has his, we'll see who gets the next one. I don't think QB's are rated on how many yards they run for, they get rated by the points their offense scores and the how many games the win. Oh and the number of TD passes and passing yards kinda count to. And you should leave Zac out of the discussion. He isn't even in the ball park with the others you mention.

WOW!! AND 42 yards rushing in 2008 and 7 yards rushing in 2007!! Heck, Zac Robinson- 847 rushing yards in 2007 and 562 rushing yards in 2008. Colt McCoy- 492 rushing yards in '07 and 561 rushing yards in '08. Tim Tebow (2008 REAL Heisman winner)- 895 rushing yards in '07 and 673 rushing yards in '08. I guess you can figure out who is the better QB. Little pansy bradford doesn't wanna get hurt.

Hows this for a "what if". What if OU had hired Bill Snyder instead of Stoops. What if Mike
Stoops had stayed at OU as Def. Co-ord. What if Stoops hadn't promised the Bomar family
the World to get Rhett to come to OU and gave Thompson a legitimate chance at QB. What
if a majority of season ticket holders say "we're tired of seeing OU over-hyped in the press,
and having an embarrassing defense, can't play with or beat a legitimate top 10 team, as
the Bowls proved the Big 12 had only one legit. top 10 team, and tired of losing in prime
time BCS Bowls and National Title games and having no accountability from the coach.?
Just a few What -If's for a start. Remember when the press over-hype's them here, they are
being laughed at somewhere else.

He should've come out this year and stopped hiding his feelings. He should stand up for what he is and what he believes in. I mean, there are others like him and they are proud and flaunt it everywhere, at rallys, in clubs, and in even in my local Walmart. But it doesn't bother me man..."..live and let live" I always say.
