WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

Here's a look at what players, coaches and pundits are saying about Mack Brown and his resignation at Texas:

Bob Stoops, OU coach: “A man of integrity who has always had the best interests of young people and our sport at heart. I thank him for a rivalry that was always played with the right perspective. I offer my congratulations on a tenure filled with accomplishments.”

Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times: “I would have always bet Brown would go out in a year he lost to BCS-bound Oklahoma, not a year he beat BCS-bound Oklahoma.”

Kliff Kingsbury, Texas Tech coach: “People forget where the program was when he got there and where he took them. He was great for the entire state.”

R.C. Slocum, Former Texas A&M coach: “He was so effective as a recruiter, he got mischaracterized as Mr. February. I thought he was a heck of a coach.”

Mike Greenberg, ESPN: “Mack Brown may have deserved better than he got. But that program has every built-in advantage, and it was sliding. Time for change.”

Emmanuel Acho, former Texas linebacker and current Philadelphia Eagle: “Feeling like my girl just left me.”

Tim Cowlishaw, Dallas Morning-News: “Brown reached that elevated status where he was better than his detractors would admit but far less successful than he was likely to acknowledge. ... At the same time, the goal of any prominent college coach — the only one he can really control, given the unpredictable nature of the BCS system — is to win conference championships. That's the first step starting each September. In 16 seasons, Mack won two.”
