Today’s featured event:
Celebrate the release of Oklahoma experimental art-pop band Colourmusic’s new album at 9 tonight at Blue Note Lounge, 2408 N Robinson Ave. The show also will feature Bed People.
My lovely colleague Nathan Poppe chatted with Colourmusic about the group’s new purple-themed creation, “May You Marry Rich,” the third and most challenging Colourmusic full-length album to date.
“May You Marry Rich” was released Tuesday, and the recording process started with an attitude change. The band planned to keep the word “no” out of the equation and approach every idea as a good one, reports Poppe.
This is the first time Colourmusic started an album without song ideas in mind. Pieces of the band’s first two albums were conceived as early as 2003, after frontman Ryan Hendrix and auxiliary band member Nick Turner met during Turner’s stay as an exchange student at Oklahoma State University.
“It’s an ugly album that I think is beautiful,” Hendrix tells Poppe. “I think it’s beautiful in its ugliness. That in a way is one of the big statements that we’re attracted to as a band.”
