Today’s featured event:
NORMAN -Norman Arts Council and Dual Tone present an all-ages night of indie pop featuring Son of Stan (Dallas-Fort Worth/Los Angeles), Depth & Current (Norman) and Bored Wax (Oklahoma City) in conjunction with MAINSITE Contemporary Art’s Selfie exhibition. Cover is $5 at the door.
Son of Stan is the brainchild of Grammy-winning artist Jordan Richardson, a prodigious drummer who toured with Ben Harper as one of the Relentless7 before recently leaving to focus on making his own music, a sleek and adventurous brand of indie pop that blends elements of Ariel Pink, Twin Shadow, Flaming Lips and Dan Deacon. He released his debut Divorce Pop last year and is already at work on a followup.
Norman’s Depth & Current has transformed from heavy shoegaze rockers to some of the finest noise pop makers of the region, as heard on last year’s excellent “Transient.” The duo has more material due sometime this year.
And then there’s Bored Wax, a surf-rock meets post-punk outfit that shares our love of The Drums, Beach Fossils and Silent Alarm-era Bloc Party. Their debut EP will be unveiled later this spring.
MAINSITE Contemporary Art is located at 122 E Main Street.
“Selfie: An Exhibition on Identity” is a group exhibition featuring both local and national artists who have created introspective works born out of their wide array of backgrounds, cultures and life experiences through a variety of mediums and methodologies. Selfies, the smartphone-snapped images sprayed across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, reached worldwide ubiquity with the masses in 2013, but self-portraits have been a staple of visual artists’ practices for centuries.
The 25 artists in the exhibition include Adam Lanman, Alexa Stinson, Anike Robinson, Anna Rutherford, Ashley Sword-Buster, Autumn N. Brown, Beatiz Mayorca, Brendon Williams, Charica Daugherty, Daniel Box, Daniel King, David Maxwell, Elliot Robbins, Ginna Dowling, Hershel Self, Jalisa Haggins, Jef Mayz, Jessica Garvey, Katy Nickell, Kerry Azzarello, Kristen Brown, Michael Ashby, Narciso Argüelles, Randall Barnes and Trent Lawson.
Krystle Brewer and Mary Kathryn Moeller are curating the exhibit, which will run through Saturday, March 15 with a closing reception scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 14.
MAINSITE Contemporary Art is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Go to mainsite-art.com for more information on the gallery.
