STILLWATER – Hear a diverse country music lineup featuring The Turnpike Troubadours, American Aquarium, Chris Knight, Mike and the Moonpies and Folk Family Revival as the 23rd Annual Calf Fry begins at 6:30 tonight at the Tumbleweed Dance Hall, Lakeview and Country Club roads. Doors open at 5 p.m.
The three-day “testicle festival” continues Friday with Josh Abbott Band, Jason Boland & The Stragglers, Corey Smith, Bart Crow and The Railers. The Saturday lineup includes Easton Corbin, Charlie Robison, Jaida Dreyer and Lower 40.
This year’s lineup truly shows the diversity of red dirt music and country music in general. The lineup boasts big names from Oklahoma Red Dirt, Texas country and Nashville country music, which appeals to generations both young and old,” said Scott Marsh, Chief Operations Officer for Levelland Productions, in an email. “We strive to continue growing Calf Fry, so that we can showcase Oklahoma and the great music that it has produced over the years.”
Marking “23 years of turning bulls into steers,” the festival serves up fried calf testicles along with country music. Last year, the event dished up a record 3,000-plus pounds of calf fries to more than 30,000 attendees, and the festival’s culinary aspect was even featured on the Travel Channel.
When it comes to Stillwater’s Calf Fry, Evan Felker has fond memories from all sides of the stage.
After all, the Turnpike Troubadours singer/guitarist has been attending the Tumbleweed Dance Hall’s “testicle festival” regularly since before he even had a band to call his own.
“I was there when I was 19 probably, which is a long time ago now, and seeing (Cross Canadian) Ragweed and Great Divide,” Felker recalled to me in a recent phone interview. “I think I saw the Red Dirt Rangers there for the first time I’d ever seen them play, and their friends of ours now. And (Jason) Boland and all those guys … so it’s a bit nostalgic for me to go back there every year. It never fails to be.”
