Below is some of what we learned about the 2009 Sooners from the spring, as well as some of what we’ve yet to find out:

What we learned
The defensive front is stockpiled with depth and talent

Clearly, the most impressive unit of the Red-White game was the defensive front, which boasts five capable defensive ends, including standouts Auston English, Jeremy Beal and Frank Alexander, and enough linebackers to go three-deep in the middle and both outside spots. Injuries crippled the defensive front last year. But with this much depth, the Sooners should be able to overcome any injuries to defensive end or linebacker next season.

→The rebuilt wide receiving corps is good enough for OU to win big

Despite losing three of its top four receivers, OU quickly reloaded at wide receiver, thanks to the shrewd move of shifting Ryan Broyles to the outside, and bumping third-team running back Mossis Madu to the slot. That, combined with the emergence of spring MVP Adron Tennell, has allowed OU to put its best skill players on the field at once. The group is deep, as well, with Dejuan Miller, Jameel Owens, Brandon Caleb and Cameron Kenney sure to contribute.

What we don’t know
Can special teams become a strength, or at least not a weakness?

Last year, poor special teams hurt OU in its two biggest games, Texas and Florida, both losses. The Red-White game didn’t do anything to suggest the kicking game will be any better in 2009. Tress Way averaged 37.6 yards a punt, which would’ve ranked 95th in the nation last season. He also didn’t have a kickoff go past the 8-yard line. Place-kicker Jimmy Stevens was 3-of-3 on extra points, but he didn’t even attempt a field goal.

→Can the offensive line protect QB Sam Bradford and pave lanes for the running game?

On the first series of the Red-White game, the line allowed Bradford to be sacked twice, then failed to establish the running game the rest of the day. In fairness, the group was shorthanded due to injuries to Stephen Good and Jarvis Jones, which forced Trent Williams, Brian Simmons, Brian Lepak, Ben Habern, Alex Williams and Cory Brandon to play a ton of snaps. But even in the early going, when they shouldn’t have been tired, the offensive line was whipped by the defense more often than not. Time will tell if this line, which has the potential to be stout, can gel into a championship-caliber unit.

Gary Danielson summed it up best on Saturday when he previewed the teams and conference's
that were in the top 10 last year. Big 12, great conference for putting points on the board, but
the teams don't play any defense. I thought he was a little harsh on OU last season when he did
their games, but he ended up being right. Their defense was suspect. along with T.T., and OSU.
Texas was the only team he gave a passing grade to. He was right there, also. Texas has
found a way to win their Bowl games the last two years. Key phrase, find a way to win, just
like OU did under Switzer. Those were great days, with accountable teams on both offense
and defense, and Special Teams. Mr. Danielson also thinks this new Texas defensive Co.
will have better results this year, after his team has had a year to learn his system. OU
wasn't mentioned, wonder why? Could it be that there's been NO improvement from one
year to the next for the last 6 season's on defense. Stats. don't lie. Thats where the proof
lies.

Tennell made some great catches and reminded me a lot of Malcolm Kelley.

I looked at the stats from last year's spring game and they were not much different from this year's game. It is whatr it is, a controlled scrimmage that fans are allowed to watch. Stoops and company are not about to show anything that they think can be used against them next season. Most other team's spring games turn out the same as OU's. I thought the wide variance in assessments about Landry Jones are interesting- some say he looked better than they thought he would and others are a little disappointed. How did the WRs look? Were they open more often than not, just a case of the QBs not getting the ball to them?
Richard, Visalia - Apr 14, 2009 at 1:38 pm
FIRE BRETT VULNERABLES!!! HIRE JOE FROM EDMOND FOR THE JOB!! Let's see...we learned that our D knew the plays that our O was calling. That's about all.
Scott, Indian Territory - Apr 14, 2009 at 1:01 pm
What have we learned this Spring? What have we seen in the past? What did we see last year
with 10 defensive starter returning? What do you think we will see this year with 9 defensive
starters returning? What have we seen in the past with lots of defensive starters returning
and the same defensive co-ord.? When is the offense going to be able to stop carrying the
defense? When is the defense going to start taking charge in crucial games to show the
offense they are part of the team, also, like the Switzer era? When is OU going to field a
kick-off team that doesn't allow the opponent to start from their own 35-40 yd. line, or
run the kick back for a TD? When is Bob Stoops going to take charge of his team and make
some logical game decisions, that separates him from Blake, Gibbs, and Big Howie? When
are all the fans and supporters, faithful follower's of one of the most storied programs in
College Football History going to get a return for all the money they spend during the
season, in the form of a Bowl Victory or NC? Some of just a few of the many questions
that Stoops needs to be held accountable for answering. The press can give Bob a pass,
thats to be expected, but, the last time some of us received an answer in the form of a
question, like Bob does on Tues. or his show, was when we were dealing with our kids.
I guess you might say on Tuesday it's the Buffalo Bob Show and the Peanut Gallery. Will
Howdy Doody come from the Printed Press, Telecast Press, or Broadcast Press? You pick'em!

for the first time in recent memory,,,,ou s second QB is weak,,,,,we better hope sam doesnt get hurt,,,,,,watching landry jones sat. he just threw it up when rushed,,,,,,,,,maybe some playing time will remedy that,,,,better let em play big game bob when you get a big lead next year... i know threre is no competion for the starting job,,,but the fall off between breadford and jones is drastic ..compared to white/hybl,,,or even bomar /thompson

jo once again you display selective memory. The OU defense ranked 4th in the nation in sacks and 10th in the nation in tackles for a loss.
Richard, Visalia - Apr 13, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Went to the game, I feel a lot more secure with Landry Jones as backup than I did with Hazle. Also, the 4th team QB impressed me much more than #3.
D-line will make the O-line better after pounding the crap out of them all summer and fall, this is going to be one of the best D's we've seen since '85 or '01.
The reason for my optimism is that they (Defensive 1 & 2's) seemed to know their assignments for the first time since Mike Stoops left. , and they are really scary talent wise. Jay/Tulsa
Jay , Tulsa - Apr 13, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Defense: They were stockpiled last year and had no pass rush and couldn't make a stop in
short yardage, clutch situations, and most all of the same guys that couldn't do it then are
back this season. 50th in the nation in '08 in total defense, before Florida, what do you think.
Offense: Good enough to carry the defense again, like usual. Coach Wilson know's what he
has on Venables side of the ball.
Special Teams: Hope they aren't a joke like they were last year. Of course that is Stoops
area of "expertise". 11 games into the season and they were still giving up big chunks of
yards and TD's. Maybe this year OU can find a KO guy that can get the ball, at least,
inside the 10 and maybe find a punter, so every punt is not a "look-out" punt.
Same players on special teams that were there last year, what do you think the outcome
will be?
Unknowns: They'll be unknown when the season ends, like every other season. Thats
an area that the press can stop on Tuesday's if they will create a "No Spin Zone" for
Stoops and Co.
Overall Prediction: Offense-Top 10../.Defense-50 to 60. Special teams-???

I would like to see Carter Whitson get a chance to play more this year he looks like he's got decent speed, runs good routs, and has great hands.I'm not saying he should start but give the kid a chance he seems like a sneaky guy that could make some plays.

there you go scott, a true sooner fan, from chickasha. have faith and encourage them on. they be allright. ou-johnny.
johnny, olney - Apr 13, 2009 at 9:41 am
had too come back and tell sooner nation and the ou players a true story in 2004 and 2005, and even now. here in west texas a small town called the throckmorton greyhounds were starting up in 6-man football in there first football season. kind of like 8-man football in oklahoma but 2-short of players. anyway i worked with the boys in the weight room and on fundamentals on the game. i told them if they give 110-percent on every play and encouraged each other on and too never give up attitude anything can happen. and sure enough they went (12-1) there first season, and in 2005, they was really hungry for a state title, they would show up early before sunrise and pratice hard and listen too the coach. and sure enough they went on too win there first state 6-man crown (15-0) record and broke the national record in scoring trindad,tx had it since 1994. i was at the game in abilene,tx at shotwell stadium. after the game the players spooted me wearing my ou-football cap and shirt, always wear it too all there games and they knew who i was so did the coaches haha. they came over and hug and thank me for the faith in them. and too this day in throckmorton,tx ex and now players looked up too me for encouragement and the kids family always want too but me lunch or go fishing and stuff. anyway i wanted too let sooner nation know about the might throckmorton greyhounds, now they are a power-house football team too reckon with and tradition too carry on. iam like bob stoops is up in oklahoma. olney newcastle and graham,tx they know me as well. they don,t like me in graham as much since they have brad mccOY caching graham high school haha thats ok. colt mcCOYS DAD. what i am really getting at oklahoma sooners take the same attitude as throckmorton did. one game at a time team effort and hard work pays off. yep this summer i be out there early before sunrise encouraging the greyhounds on sitting in my big ou-red chevy silverado. i notice when i pull up they get alittle excited and try even harder. the coaches notice too haha. 3-years ago scooted proctor my buddy in norman got me started once a sooner always a sooner. ou-johnny,s true story. about my boys in throckmorton,tx.
johnny, olney - Apr 13, 2009 at 9:38 am
Johnny's right. Maybe we're getting too ahead of ourselves here, but that's how we are. New O line will take time to gel together. But whatever happens, I'm keeping the faith, BABY!!!!
Scott, Chickasha - Apr 13, 2009 at 9:23 am
i was at the game saturday and was fired-up for some ou-football. the fans was excited and hungry too see what was coming in. when they introduce the ex and now sooner players during half that was awesome. 48 family members was not dissapointed. the press seemed too be thats all they talk about. you guys get outthere and put the pads on and take the hits and see if you can do any better. walk in your own shoes first. its still early they will be allright. just have too learn each others ways on offense and defense. takes time too jell togewther ony football players know this. the press who knows about them. real sooner fans have faith in our boys. win or lose always a diehard sooner fan. ou-johnny.
johnny, olney - Apr 13, 2009 at 9:20 am
if the other teams in the Big 12 figure out that OU can't run the ball, they'll be rushing all 11 guys at Bradford. If that's the case, it could be along year for OU, especially with no improvement seen in the kicking/special teams game.
Chris, OKC - Apr 13, 2009 at 8:39 am
Hmmm, sounds like probably another big XII title and a painful loss in a BCS... better than being 3rd or 4th in the south division and having to wear orange gear.
Britton, Edmond - Apr 13, 2009 at 8:37 am
I'll tell ya what worries me...the defense...still. Until we get a dominating defense (top 5) back at OU, it won't matter how good the offense is. We had the most prolific offense in the history of college football last season and still had to have tiebreaker decide the B12 and lost the NC game. I'm telling ya, another mediocre defense will produce another mediocre outcome of the season.
Vince, Tuttle - Apr 13, 2009 at 8:30 am
Will bob throw the visor first or the headset? Other than that, nothing new!
curtis, durant - Apr 13, 2009 at 8:21 am
I'd hope they worked out the bugs with special teams and the kicking game. According to this, those problems still exist.
Scott, Chickasha - Apr 13, 2009 at 8:13 am

Lee, have your medication checked! There's no way we lose 4, that's just plain crazy talkin'. As far as being able to run the ball last weekend, I'd have been more concerned if we did run the ball well against our DL. Can October 17th get here quick enough?!
Patrick, Fayetteville - Apr 13, 2009 at 7:35 am
For me, we don't know if we can run with the Texases, Floridas of the world either (still). I think we have four losses this year...
