Ten years ago this month, OSU’s John Lucas sank a shot over Saint Joseph’s Tyrone Barley that sent the Cowboys to the Final Four.
Lucas remains in the NBA, with the Utah Jazz. Barley is in a Pennsylvania prison, sentenced last November to 10-to-20 years for armed robbery and a reckless police chase.
According to the Local Daily News of West Chester, Pa., Barley pleaded guilty last September to charges that he held three women at gunpoint during a robbery in West Chester on Feb. 20, 2013.
Barley was Saint Joseph’s sixth man on its great 2003-04 team. He went on to play professionally in New Zealand and in the minor league American Basketball Association, then worked with troubled youths and from many accounts was a good husband and father.
“It doesn’t make any sense,” Barley’s defense attorney, Arik Benari told the judge in asking for leniency. “The only thing that I can think of is that he was under the influence of something.”
