White named Big 12 offensive player of year

The awards and honors are starting to roll in for Oklahoma quarterback Jason White.

Big 12 honorees

Oklahoma’s Jason White and Adrian Peterson received Big 12 post-season honors Tuesday by the Associated Press:

Offensive player of the year: Jason White, Oklahoma

Defensive player of the year: Derrick Johnson, Texas

Offensive newcomer of the year: Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma

Defensive newcomer of the year: Jordon Dizon, Colorado

White on Wednesday was selected as The Associated Press' Big 12 offensive player of the year for the second straight season in voting by reporters who regularly cover the league for newspapers in the seven states with Big 12 teams.

He also was named the offensive player of the year on the All-Big 12 team picked by league coaches.

White won both awards last year and joins Texas' Ricky Williams as the only winners of both awards in back-to-back seasons.

OU freshman running back Adrian Peteson was named the league's outstanding offensive newcomer on the AP's team and also made the first team of the coaches' All-Big 12 team.

The coaches picked Peterson as both the offensive freshman and newcomer of the year.

White also was named winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the best senior quarterback in college football. Mississippi's Eli Manning won the award last season.

Also on Wednesday, White, Peterson and Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart were named finalists for the Maxwell Award as the nation's outstanding player.

The award will be presented Dec. 9 during ESPN's College Football Awards show.

White got 15 of the 20 votes for offensive player of the year in balloting for the Big 12 award, with Texas running back Cedric Benson receiving three and Peterson receiving two.
