As the fourth quarter of the 2014 Super Bowl dragged on, Fox began showing highlights from the 1979 SuperSonics, claiming it was the city’s only professional sports champion.

Wait, really?

I thought the Seattle Storm had won two championships since then. Oh, that’s right. They did win in 2004 and 2010.

According to Jayda Evans of The Seattle Times, the Storm was actually the first to give the city a championship since the Sonics. The first one in 2004 also resulted in headlines throughout The Seattle Times acknowledging the Storm as the city’s first champion in then-25 years.

Apparently, that was overlooked Sunday, and CEO Karen Bryant and WNBA star Lauren Jackson weren’t happy about it.

Can you blame them? WNBA players are professional athletes who work incredibly hard to win a national championship. That needs to be recognized.
