A fire that destroyed two mobile homes, damaged several others and burned 350 acres Sunday was caused by a discarded cigarette, a fire official said today.

No one was injured in the fire southeast of Blair in Jackson County about 4:30 p.m. Sunday that burned in high winds, said Blair Fire Chief Dennis Davis.

The fire started about 2 miles southeast of Blair.

Humidity was low and it was windy and dry when a man put a cigarette out on a porch of a mobile home about 3:30 p.m., Blair said. When the man went outside to smoke another cigarette an hour later he saw the grass fire.

A mobile home that people lived in currently was destroyed and another mobile home that was not currently occupied by anyone was also destroyed. Up to a dozen other homes sustained fire and smoke damages, Blair said.

He said at one time 46 homes were threatened but firefighters from 16 departments got it under control. About 102 firefighters fought the wildfire.

The man who started the fire will not face any criminal complaints. The fire cause has been ruled accidental, Davis said.

A high fire danger remains across the state today due to high winds and dry conditions.

Blair said there were 46 mph gusts of wind whipping the Sunday fire in Jackson County.
