Company reaches out to students
AAR Corp. plans to reach out to some Oklahoma City schools over the next year to promote careers in aviation.
The Flying into the Future Program will include visits to schools, invitations for classes to visit AAR facilities and a summer internship program for high school students to work at AAR and earn scholarships.
Most AAR jobs in Oklahoma City are in aircraft maintenance, repair and operations. AAR competes with Tinker Air Force Base for skilled mechanics so it can be difficult to meet work force needs, said AAR CEO David Storch.
"It's a very exciting industry," Storch said. "I want to hire the best people and give them the chance to be the best they can be."
AAR Corp. operates the terminal, which was jointly funded with the Oklahoma City Airport Trust.
The 6,000-square-foot building can handle about 10,000 flights annually. It replaces an older terminal that passengers could only access by climbing a set of stairs and crossing over a maintenance shop.
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett said the modern terminal will impress business leaders and help the city attract economic development.
"This is a wonderful front door for our community for business travelers coming in," Cornett said at a news conference. He then noted the doors were well over 8 feet tall, easily accommodating Oklahoma City Thunder players, frequent travelers at the terminal.
